Blue Hoksemi Acropora
Originally acquired from Steve Tyree
The Blue Hoeksemai Acropora (Acropora hoeksemai) is a classic, aquacultured small polyp stony (SPS) coral strain originating from Indonesian mariculture, revered in the reef aquarium hobby as the "king of blue staghorn corals" for its striking azure hues and robust branching form, though it's notoriously challenging even for advanced keepers.
Appearance
Structure: Forms staghorn-like colonies with irregularly fused horizontal branches that can exceed 2 meters in the wild, featuring evenly spaced vertical offshoots and upturned, pointed branch ends; branches are robust and irregularly spaced, with uniform tubular radial corallites neatly aligned along them, creating a bushy yet sturdy silhouette.
Coloration: Pale cream or brown in natural habitats, but in aquariums, it develops vibrant blue skeletal branches and polyps that fluoresce intensely under actinic or blue-enriched lighting, often with subtle purple or pink accents for added depth and iridescence.
Size and Growth: Frags start small (0.5-1 inch), with moderate growth rates once established—vertical emphasis for light competition—but colonies can expand to 6-12 inches tall in captivity over 12-18 months.
